Ram Chandra Poudel

Ram Chandra Poudel or Ram Chandra Paudel is a Nepalese politician, belonging to the Nepali Congress. In the 2008 Constituent Assembly election he was elected from the Tanahu-2 constituency, winning 18970 votes.[1]

He served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nepal from 1994–1999. During 2000-2002 Paudel became Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal and took charge of crucial home ministry at the time of conflict.

He served as Chairman of Peace Secretariat during 2006-2007 & Minister for Peace and Reconstruction in 2008. The Peace Secretariat was constituted with participation from all 7 major political parties including Maoist Party of Nepal. Through his efforts the Interim Constitution was drafted, finalized and signed between the Nepalese Govt and Maoist Party, which also ended the King's direct rule in Nepal before holding the general election of Constitutional Assembly in April 2008.

He was elected as the Leader of Parliamentary Party of the Nepali Congress on June 20, 2009 by securing 61 votes against Sher Bahadur Deuba, a former Prime Minister who secured 48 votes.

Paudel is also Vice President of Nepali Congress Party.

Paudel Spent more than 13 years in jails on various occasions being an opponent of political ideology of dictatorial Panchayat Regime (an authoritarian rule of the King) from 1962 to 1989.

Mr. Paudel has authored almost half dozen of books on democracy and socialism. Among his bestselling books - Socialism in New Context(2005), Democratic Socialism a Study (1989) , Path of hope (1998) and Nepali Congress and Modeization of Nepal(2009) are published in thousands of copies by Sahajivan Publications.
